Demineralized water for steam turbines

Project Overview

Client: Ministry of Energy

Location: Iraq

Year of Commissioning: 2013

Application: Demineralized water for steam turbines

Capacity: 2 × 25 m³/h parallel lines

Project Background

The IST Power Plant required ultrapure water from well sources with high silica content. Without a buffer tank, the system had to operate continuously through two parallel lines at 50% capacity each.

Engineering Solution

Engineered to achieve conductivity below 0.1 µS/cm, the treatment process included:

Sand filtration

Two-stage RO

Ion exchange (cation, anion, mixed-bed)

Acid and caustic dosing

Neutralization and polishing (NP)

Design was developed with Filmtec and R&H, ensuring high membrane performance and compact layout.

Operational Results

The system has delivered uninterrupted high-quality water, maintaining stability despite feed water challenges

Regional Impact

The project enabled reliable power generation, improving energy access and serving as a model for constrained environments.
